Designing the driveway - proven expert advice

The minimum driveway width, allowing free movement around it, is 3 m. In places where there is little free space, and where there are differences in inclination, it is good to lay fine paving stone. Here are a few tips for people who are planning the construction or renovation of a driveway using paving stone.

1.Driveway dimensions

Regardless of the model of car that we are going to park, the optimum driveway width is 3 meters. The greater the space we have at our disposal, the more confident we can be about experimenting with the layout of the driveway, and also, while determining the contours of the pavement, we can take into account the additional communication routes: a bay for another car or convenient paths leading to the house, the garden or timber storage.

2. Paving stone thickness

For the purposes of vehicles not exceeding 3.5 t, a paving stone with the thickness of 6 cm will suffice. Heavier vehicles require a paving stone with a minimum thickness of 8 cm.

3. Paving stone shape

Both small and large paving stone will look good on the driveway. When preparing a design for the driveway, there are a few rules to remember
1) Fine paving stones work well in smaller spaces, narrow driveways and arcs, where they eliminate the need of excessive cuts, as well as in places where there are differences in inclination (smaller paving stone is also more resistant to damage.
2) Large panels and stones look best in larger areas, where we can allow for spacious arrangements.

4. Arrangement style

Depending on preferences, facade and roof tile color, we can choose from stylized (e.g. the characteristic Polbruk Petra, color melanges) and modern products (all washed paving stones, terrace slabs). When selecting colors, we look for common points (roof, fencing). The most common color combinations are: brown + yellow and gray + graphite, and among stylized products - hawaii (brown-orange) + latte (white-ligh sand), that is any contrasting combinations. To the more daring of you, we can recommend not only playing with colors, but also shapes within the very same color, but of different types of paving stones. Example: a combination of the Polbruk Granito latte paving stone with the Carmino trapezoids in the same or contrasting color. During the design, we should also pay attention to details: ducts or inspection holes, which can be concealed under the paving stones, creating an aesthetically pleasing arrangement. It is best to order the design from a professional advisor, and to discuss the assumptions and our expectations with him or her. All the renowned manufacturers offer a design service.
